POSITION:  HORTICULTURIST

LOCATION:  Green Lawn Cemetery, 1000 Greenlawn Ave., Columbus, OH  43223

STARTING SALARY:  $32,000 - $38,000 annually depending on experience, benefits

DESCRIPTION:

This position plans, maintains, and supervises the horticultural program for a 360-acre historic cemetery, which includes  gardens, burial lots, trees, and turf. The position will supervise mowing and trimming and implement a grounds and tree management plan.  The horticulturist will work closely with the cemetery association and management operator in support of their efforts to preserve and beautify the park on behalf of the community.

JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                             Horticulturist

REPORTS TO:                  Grounds Superintendent

CLASSIFICATION:            Full-Time; Exempt

JOB OVERVIEW:

This position will maintain gardens, trees and shrubs, turf, irrigation, and pond systems and supervise the horticultural activities, volunteers, seasonal employees, and horticultural interns. The position will also  help design gardens, lots, and spaces in cooperation with our cemetery staff and operating partners.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise garden staff, volunteers and/or work crews
  • Perform regular inspections throughout the gardens, including turf and lawn maintenance, insect/disease problems, weed control needs, clean-up issues, etc.
  • Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials, with minor maintenance of power equipment and irrigation
  • Responsible for maintaining required knowledge of established plants, recording plant information, identifying plant material, and processing records for plants as required

and maintain horticultural calendar for plant and grounds care needs

  • Lead horticultural tours as needed and assist with educational programming and special events
  • Occasional supervision of the Grounds crew in the absence of the Grounds Superintendent

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of common grounds equipment and tools
  • Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates and/or volunteers
  • Knowledge of garden, native and invasive plants and trees and their care, and a sense of aesthetics related to their uses and best management practices
  • Knowledge of horticultural practices to facilitate plant health (e.g., soil nutrition, sustainable gardening, ecology, pest / weed management, pond management, and irrigation systems)
  • Ability to use, keep, maintain electronic and manual records and policies
  • Proficiency in MS Office or Google Suite, ARC/GIS and other related tools/technology
  • Ability to lift at least 60 pounds

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associates or bachelors degree in horticulture, botany, natural sciences, or closely related field preferred
  • Hands-on experience in public gardens and supervisory experience with landscape or garden staff preferred
  • Previous experience in garden or grounds maintenance with the ability to operate various types of hand- and power-operated tools and equipment utilized in all phases of horticulture work (e.g., lawnmower, front-end loader, tractors, backpack sprayers, weed-eaters, chainsaws)
  • Ability to apply for an Ohio Commercial Pesticide and Herbicide Applicator’s License (ornamental and turf category) within 90 days of hire
