The City of Kettering, Ohio, is seeking an exceptional professional to fill the position of Engineering Technician – Traffic. The Technician will perform technical engineering work in the field and the office in connection with the investigation, development, and maintenance of civil engineering projects, programs, and infrastructure and other duties as assigned. Work is performed under the general supervision of an Engineer. The work in this position requires high level skills in the use of Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) design software used for the design of civil engineering projects, particularly traffic control. A basic level of understanding in traffic control systems and equipment is necessary for this position.
Basic knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of civil engineering, particularly traffic engineering; Skill in the care and use of the standard tools, equipment, and testing devices used in civil engineering; Ability to read, interpret, and work from technical sketches, construction documents, and maps (both paper and digital); Maintain complete and accurate records and reports; Work effectively with fellow employees, contractors, and the general public; Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability and experience with using desktop and/or laptop computer applications for various uses, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office, CAD software (Autodesk Civil 3D), ESRI GIS software, and surveying-specific software; Ability to utilize both conventional survey equipment and GPS survey equipment for field data collection and layout; Ability to safely and efficiently operate a variety of motorized equipment; Must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License at the time of appointment, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of appointment; Thorough knowledge of basic math, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry used in civil engineering design and drafting, and construction; Must have the ability to grasp, lift, and maneuver hand tools, power tools, equipment, and materials of various weights and sizes, in a manner which is safe and effective in the performance of work; Ability to understand and follow written instructions, labels, and hazard notices; Ability to understand, follow, and communicate oral and written instructions; Ability to exercise alertness and judgment to report possible hazards; Ability to work outside in all types of weather and traffic conditions; Adequate physical condition to perform position duties.
Minimum of an Associate Degree (2-year) in Civil Engineering Technology; Surveying and Geomatics Technology; Construction Engineering Technology; Architectural Engineering Technology; or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution, with specialized training and experience in engineering surveying principles and practices, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Thorough knowledge and experience with utilizing Autodesk Civil 3D CAD design software. Basic knowledge and experience with GIS software desired. Must have the ability to quickly learn, develop, and maintain a thorough knowledge and professional skills and abilities in those areas noted above.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Pay range is $23.79/hr. ($49,483/yr.) to $35.39/hr. ($73,611/yr.); Entry rate is contingent upon candidate’s experience, qualifications and related skills, knowledge and abilities; excellent benefits.
