Job Description

Sycamore Township Maintenance Department is seeking a full time Mechanic. Qualified candidates should send resume and cover letter to Assistant Township Administrator Tracy Kellums at tkellums@sycamoretownship.org.

Under direction, performs maintenance and major mechanical repair on township vehicles and equipment; operates pickup truck to perform repairs on equipment and vehicles on the road and to pick up parts and supplies; maintains records of parts, supplies and fuel used, etc.; maintains adequate supply of parts and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Coursework in mechanics, automotive maintenance and repair, and diesel school certification or;
  • Four (4) years experience performing equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair (or equivalent combinations oftraining and/or experience which evidences an advanced knowledge of automotive and light to heavy equipmentmechanics including diesel certification, maintenance and repair, hydraulic repair principles and procedures and safetypractices).
  • Demonstrable skill in using hand and electric tools and operating light to heavy equipment and/or equivalentcombinations of training and/or experience.
  • Note: Employees must have, or be able to obtain during the probationary period, a valid Class A - Commercial Driver'sLicense issued by the state of residency in order to operate dump truck for road work and snow and ice control.

Illustrative Duties:

1. Performs maintenance and major mechanical repair work on township vehicles and equipment including electrical systems, gas, diesel powered engines (e.g., tune engines, repairs, rebuilds and replaces engines, hydraulic systems, brake and exhaust systems, changes oil & fluids, replaces headlights, signal lights, changes tires, radiators, belts, lubricates equipment, etc.); fabricates or modifies parts to perform repairs; operates test equipment or talks to operator to locate mechanical problems; uses hand and electric tools to perform repairs; ensures project completion; ensures proper safety standards are maintained; maintains work area in orderly fashion.

2. Maintains records of equipment repairs and maintenance (e.g., oil changes, lubes, parts replaced, tune-ups, dates, etc.); maintains adequate supply of parts and supplies needed for maintenance and repair; submits and tracks Purchase Orders (PO's) for parts and repairs.

3. Welds cracked or broken metal parts and appendages on equipment and vehicles; cuts shapes and fabricates brackets, hinges, special tools, etc.

4. Performs various unskilled and semi-skilled tasks to assist and work with the Township Maintenance Department; operates jackhammer, chainsaw, power drills, hand tools and other light equipment; operates truck & plow for snow & ice control; operates truck & power equipment for leaf collection; sweeps floors, mows grass, cleans garage, restrooms and offices, shovel snow, builds and maintains road blocks, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

Safety practices and procedures; automotive, diesel and light to heavy equipment mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures; hydraulic & electrical repair principles and procedures; functional supervision; welding techniques and methods; mechanical diagrams.

Skill in:

Equipment mechanics; heavy equipment operation; use of hand held power tools; operation of pickup truck and dump truck; use of arc welder; use of acetylene torch.

Ability to:

Understand manuals and oral instructions technical in nature; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; deal with problems involving several variables on familiar context; demonstrate physical strength; complete routine forms; maintain accurate records; read, copy and record figures correctly; add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers.
